Music at Xaverian, better known as MAX, was started in 1994 with one performing group, the Concert Band. Since its inception the program has grown to include the Select Band, the Concert Band, the Jazz Bands I & II, the Jazz Chorus/Doo Wop Group, the Liturgical Choir, the Symphonic Band, Orchestra, the Bag Pipe andDrum Corps, a Theater and Drama program (2 to 3 shows a year), as well as the Genesis component that services students from sixth to eight grades. Presently there are over 260 students enrolled in MAX in one or more performing groups. Students do not need any experience to join the beginning level groups. As they progress they then move to higner level performing groups.

Music helps create a well-rounded,educated person. The musci program develops skills such as listening, cooperation, commitment, leadership and ensemble in a structured approach that will challenge students to reach their higher potential. . Music involvement translates into academic success. Students who have participated in the music program have received scholarships to college due to their involvement in the program. Schools that students have attended include Cornell University, Columbia University, Loyola, Syracuse University, Harvard University, Ford ham University, St. John's University, SUNY Binghamton, Iona College, and New York University. Students obtain knowledge that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives in whatever careers they may choose. The latest studies indicate that students who perform on an instrument or are involved in some type of musical activity show higher standardized test scores than students who have no involvement in music.

The groups perform numerous times throughout the school year. We have regularly scheduled school performances. We also perform outreach concerts at local public schools and senior citizen centers as well as at local parades. The Xaverian Band is the official band of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day and Ragamuffin Parades.
