Education
for Life
The International Baccalaureate Diploma
program is a rigorous pre-university course of study, leading
to examinations that meet the needs of the highly motivated
secondary school student. Designed as a comprehensive curriculum
that allows its graduates to fulfill requirements of the various
national systems of education, the IB is based on the pattern
of no single country. It provides students of different linguistic,
cultural and educational backgrounds with the intellectual,
social and critical perspectives necessary for the adult world
that lies ahead of them.
The organization's academic program
aims to awaken the intelligence of young people and teach
them to relate the content of the classroom to the realities
of the world outside. Comprehensive and balanced curricula
coupled with challenging assessments, have established the
IB as a unique course of studies in the arena of international
education. Beyond intellectual rigor and high standards, strong
emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding
and responsible citizenship. The desired profile of the IB
student is that of a critical and passionate thinker, an informed
participant in local and world affairs who values the shared
humanity that binds all people together while respecting the
variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness
of life."
The IB program is a natural complement
to the Mission, Philosophy and Goals which provide the foundations
for Xaverian as an educational institution. In addition to
the specific curriculum issues which education must address
as we approach the 21st century, the very grounds of Xaverian
find their roots in what has been called the 'missionary"
spirit; a spirit which, from the very beginnings of the Xaverian
legacy in this country in 1839, reaches out, above and beyond
the immediate community into the global arena. Theodore Ryken,
who brought Xaverianism to this country in the first half
of th 19th century, provided the seeds for what is currently
called "global education" and a true sense of internationalism.
