Music at Xaverian, better known as MAX, began in 1994 with 24 students and one performing group. Since its humble beginnings it has grown considerably. The program now has grown to include the Select Band, the Concert Band, a Symphonic Band, Jazz Bands I and II, a Jazz Combo, a Doo-Wop Chorus, and a Liturgical Choir. In addition to brass instrument ensembles, MAX now has a Select Orchestras, a Concert Orchestra, a Symphonic Orchestra, a String Quartet, a Pep Band, a Drum line, a Harp Ensemble and a Barbershop Quartet. The middle school participates in many of these groups as well as having their own program. Presently, there are over 300 students enrolled in MAX in one or more performing groups.
Students do not need to have any prior playing experience to join the beginning level groups. Any student with an interest in music is welcome. As the young musicians progress, they are moved into or audition for a higher level performing group.
Music helps to create a well-rounded and educated person. The Music at Xaverian Program develops skills such as discipline, listening, cooperation, commitment, leadership, and ensemble in a structured approach that will challenge students to reach their highest potential. Students can use this knowledge for the rest of their lives in whatever career paths they may choose. Music involvement translates to academic success. Students who have participated in the Music at Xaverian Program have received scholarships to colleges due to their involvement in the program. The latest studies indicate that students who perform on an instrument or are involved in some type of musical activity show higher standardized test scores than students who have no involvement in music at all.
The groups perform numerous times throughout the year. We have regularly scheduled school performances, as well as outreach concerts in the metropolitan area. The Xaverian Band is the official band of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade, The Chris Hoban Memorial Run, and the Ragamuffin Parade. We are regular attendees at the NYC Tunnel to Tower Run and many 9/11 Memorial services.
Our groups do not only receive local recognition, but national and international recognition as well. Our Chorus performed at the White House in 2001 and 2007. Our Band was invited to perform for the New York arrival of Pope Benedict XVI in April of 2008. Both the Doo-Wop Chorus and the Jazz Band I have traveled to Japan to perform three times: 2005 for “Expo 2005” (the Worlds Fair), 2007, and 2009. The Jazz Band I has been a regular participant in Talent Quest, an annual event held in Hershey Park, taking home honors each year.
