Why support Xaverian?

Xaverian has always been a special place for me. A debt of gratitude is owed to my parents who knew that I would follow a different path if I chose Xaverian for high school – a stronger peer group, more opportunities and challenges, and the Brothers to provide the values and guidance that every young man needs. The solid academic foundation I received, the excellent teamwork and spirit on the court and fields, and the long term friendships that were cultivated, all had a positive impact. Over the years I've stayed involved in alumni and fundraising events; these have always been enjoyable and gratifying. Serving on both the Board of Trustees and Investment Committee proved to be most rewarding. Even now, having settled in Connecticut with my wife and two daughters, I still support Xaverian because I want future generations of boys to have those same opportunities with which I was blessed.

In my 42+ years of teaching at Xaverian, one thing stands out, and that is the wonderful spirit between teachers and students. In addition to the lessons learned in each class, many of our students have grown into caring young men by the examples set by faculty and staff, who believe strongly in the message of Christ. The friendships that have developed when students became members of dozens of extracurricular activities, such as Stage Crew, have given them a sense of belonging, and of having friends who "have your back." My continued relationship with hundreds of former members of the Stage Crew is as strong, now, as it was when they were students. This is the true spirit of Xaverian....the honest-to-God feeling of being loved because you are you, and the strength that comes when a young man realizes this. This is the spirit that must be passed on to the new generations of Xaverian students.

Throughout the almost 20 years that have passed since my days at Xaverian, I have become ever more conscious of how critical my time there was to shaping my faith and career goals, as well as the impact of the extraordinary life-long friendships that were formed during that time. I do not write a single sentence without thinking of Dr. G, and my fluency in Italian is certainly to Mr. Verde and Mrs. Heiles' credit. My becoming an electrical engineer was greatly influenced by Mr. Bennett's guidance. I am elated and greatly encouraged by the genuine emphasis that is being placed on the Catholic values and principles which have defined our Alma Mater since its founding. My hope and desire for my son to one day walk the same Xaverian halls has been reenergized, and I am now even more dedicated to providing the support which ensures that this unique educational opportunity is available to him and many future generations of young gentlemen.

Our son graduated from Xaverian in 2007. He has expressed to us numerous times that it was the best four years of his life. He walked through the doors a boy with hope and walked out a confident, well educated, spiritual, young man with fond memories and good direction. James was an Honors student who played basketball and was involved in many school events, and still managed to do well. He was accepted to the college of his choice – New York University. Watching him succeed was one of our greatest joys. We thank the faculty and administration for making our job as parents a little easier. One knows studying makes a good student, but studying and happiness make a great student. James comes back to Xaverian each year to serve at the Community Service Thanksgiving Dinner and play in the Alumni Basketball games. Most especially, he loves motivating and instructing current students at Xaverian, which is why he has taken the position as assistant JV Basketball Coach. We can only foresee James being more and more involved with Xaverian as he grows into the man Xaverian has helped him become. We have been blessed with a wonderful experience and hope others can be as fortunate.
