FIRST Robotics Competition team 806: "The Brooklyn Blacksmiths"
Mission: To give students a hands-on, mentor-guided experience in applying science, technology, engineering and math to a team sport environment. We build cooperative and competitive skills and gracious professionalism as we brainstorm, design, model, build, program and test a robot.
Co-Captains: Brendan Woods and Peter Cardona
Activities throughout the year: Robot building season is January-February; official competition for 3 days in March in Manhattan; unofficial competitions in November and May in NJ; several demonstration appearances during the school year including 3rd and 5th Avenue Street Fairs, NYC Maker Faire, American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, XHS Open House, Spirit Day; annual recycling drive; year-round maintenance of student-run website and fundraising.
Our main objective is to build a robot every winter to play the FIRST Robotics Competition game, which is not revealed until the first weekend of January. Our smaller projects during the year are either skill-builders for the upcoming year or maintenance of the previous robot to keep it working properly after official competition is over.
