William A. Kennedy, MD '81, is a board-certified pediatric urologist and Chief of Pediatric Urology at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. He is also a Professor of Urology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dr. Kennedy is a member of the Xaverian HS Class of 1981, which he recalls his Harvard college interviewer referring to as a Xaverian “vintage year”.  He attended Harvard along with five of his Xaverian classmates.   Dr. Kennedy graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1985.  He returned to NYC and obtained his MD at Columbia University in 1989. He completed his surgical training at Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University, along with a pediatric urology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  In 2010-11, he was a Sloan Fellow at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
 
Dr. Kennedy began his faculty career at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in 1997.  Among his many leadership positions at Stanford, Dr. Kennedy is Chair of the Finance Committee for the Pediatric & Obstetrical Faculty Practice Organization, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Stanford Children’s Health, and inaugural Chair of the Board of Directors of the Packard Children’s Health Alliance, the hospital’s medical foundation.

Dr. Kennedy has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, 19 book chapters and one book. He is a section editor and manuscript review consultant for several professional journals.  He is a nationally known lecturer and has been honored by organizations for his teaching, research, and clinical accomplishments.  

Dr. Kennedy’s most notable clinical innovation has been the implementation of telemedicine services throughout the Stanford Children’s Health Northern California healthcare network in 2013.  This was achieved through a novel academic/industry collaboration between Stanford University and CISCO, for which he was the principle investigator.  Dr Kennedy completed 1000 telemedicine consultations long before the pandemic healthcare pivot to telemedicine.   Dr. Kennedy is a member of the Digital Health Steering Committee at Stanford Children’s Health and was instrumental in scaling telemedicine services to include all Stanford Pediatric clinical specialties and broadening the geographic scope of this network during the COVID pandemic.

Dr Kennedy is most proud of his clinical accomplishments in providing reconstructive surgical services to children born with congenital genitourinary anomalies.   He has operated on over 10,000 children in his 25 year career at Stanford.  He has been recognized for this work with many regional and national awards including the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Medical Staff Distinguished Service Award, citation in Castle Connolly Top Doctors since 2014 and the Compassionate Doctor Recognition Award from Vitals.com.
