On March 11th, over 70 students and faculty members at Xaverian participated in the second annual “Clip the Clippers” event. These Clippers shaved their heads or cut their hair to stand in solidarity with children fighting cancer. This year, Xaverian has raised close to $50,000 so far for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital – an organization that leads the way in childhood cancer research and ensures that no family pays a bill while there because they believe that all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
Mia Sanabria, a junior who participated in the event, had this to say: "Participating in Clip the Clippers was one of the most rewarding and uplifting things I have ever taken part in. I decided to fundraise and donate my hair because I wanted to give confidence to children who don’t feel that they fit in. They are fighting one of the toughest battles life can throw at you, so donating my hair is just one small thing I can do to put a smile on someone’s face. I hope my hair will make someone smile."
So many members of the Xaverian community played a vital role in organizing and executing the event. Faculty planning was led by Mr. Giugliano, both a graduate of Xaverian and the current chairperson of the English Department. The Xaverian Cheerleaders worked the event, collecting and securing all hair donations, selling refreshments, and creating signage and props for a photo booth set up for those to showcase their new hairstyle.
