I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and blessed Easter recess. Now that we are back in school, I wanted to take this time to give everyone an update on our sports programs. Currently, the City and State guidelines have allowed for certain sports that were not previously eligible for play to resume under a “Fall Season 2.” Outdoor spring sports are also allowed to begin. The Xaverian Athletic Program will continue to provide the safest environment possible for the student-athletes by adhering to the health and safety protocols set forth by New York City health officials.
Fall / Winter Sports
Some of the high risk sports have been given clearance to play; however, indoor high risk sports in New York City have been prohibited from competing indoors and have only been approved for competition outdoors. Obviously, this is just not practical from either a logistical standpoint or a safety standpoint. While this will result in canceling the season for most indoor sports, some sports are exploring options for limited tournament or showcase type games outside the city boundaries.
Football has been given clearance to play and will have their first game on 4/17. Spectators are limited to parents only at home games. All home games will be held at Aviator.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Girls basketball has been given permission by the league to proceed by playing some games on Long Island. Practices will commence April 16th, with competitive play beginning April 30th. There will be an informational meeting for anyone interested on April 14th at 6:30PM. Both students and parents are asked to attend. Please use this link to register
for the virtual meeting.
Boys Varsity Basketball
Boys Basketball has been given permission by the league to proceed by playing a tournament-style event in Westchester County. Practices will commence this weekend, with competitive play beginning later this month or early May.
Spring Sports Currently Underway
Outdoor sports have been approved by local health officials. Baseball, Softball, Boys Tennis, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Boys and Girls Golf, Boys and Girls Outdoor Track and Field, and Sideline Cheer have all been given clearance to play.
Sports not able to compete at this time due to restrictions in place
According to New York City Department of Health’s guidelines on indoor sports, volleyball (both girls and boys), competitive cheer, and ice hockey are not permitted to be played indoors. Each of the leagues from the individual sports will decide whether or not viable options exist to schedule any competitions outside of the city.
We know that our student-athletes are eager to get back out there, representing everything a Clipper stands for! As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
