Brother Lawrence Harvey, CFX

Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Brother Lawrence Harvey, CFX, Chairman of Xaverian's Board of Trustees, served as General Superior of the Xaverian Brothers from July 2007 through July 2013. Prior to that he served as Vicar General, the Director of Sponsorship for Xaverian Schools and a member of the Congregation’s Leadership Team. He served for twelve years at Xavier High School, Middletown, Connecticut as a teacher of English and Religion, Campus Minister, and for six years as the school’s Principal. He also served at the Congregation’s mission in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

He was a member of the Provincial Council for the Congregation’s Northeast Province as well as a member of the Province Finance Committee and Congregational Finance and Investment Committees.

He completed his undergraduate work at Boston College and has pursued graduate studies at Fordham University, Wesleyan University, and Southern Connecticut State University.

In addition to his duties for the Congregation, Brother Lawrence has served on many governing boards for schools and other non-profits. Currently he serves as the chair of the board of Xaverian High School, Brooklyn, NY and St. Bernard School, Uncasville, Connecticut. He also serves as a member of the corporations of each Xaverian school in the United States. For nine years (1998-2007) he served as chair of the Corporate Board for Mother Seton Academy in Baltimore, an alternative, Catholic middle-school in Baltimore’s inner city. He also served for over ten years on the board of The Haitian Project, Inc., a US based board of trustees that oversees the operation of Louverture Cleary School, a secondary school for economically disadvantaged, yet gifted students on the outskirts of Port au Prince, Haiti. He served as chair of this board for three years.

Nationally, Brother Lawrence has served on the advisory board for the National Catholic Education Association’s Division of Boards and served as a member of the Association’s strategic planning committee in 2005-2006. He has been a frequent speaker on the topic of board governance for Catholic schools and on Sponsorship of Catholic schools by Religious Congregations. He has also served as a consultant to Religious Congregations on governance and sponsorship.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Brother Lawrence serves as a member of the executive committee for the FORUM, the advisory group that works with the Archbishop’s delegate for religious and plans the semi-annual meeting of the Archbishop and Auxiliary Bishops with the Major Superiors of the Religious Congregations in the Archdiocese. It was because of this that the Archbishop asked him to be involved with other Religious men and women in helping the Archdiocese address the issue of Catholic Identity as described in the Archdiocese’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Catholic Schools.
