Michael J. Mennella, Executive Vice President with Tishman Construction, an AECOM company, has been in charge of all of the firm’s projects at the World Trade Center site since September 11, 2001. In this role, he oversees all of the contractors who are building these projects for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and Silverstein Properties. His extensive history with the site began early in his career when he worked as a project engineer on the original World Trade Center. As a leader in the rebuilding effort following September 11, 2001, he managed the construction of the new 7 World Trade Center, which was the first building restored on the site. He most recently managed the construction of One World Trade Center and currently manages Towers 3 and 4, the Transportation Hub and the Vehicle Security Center.
Mr. Mennella’s career has spanned 46 years in the construction industry, 40 of which have been with Tishman. During that time he has developed significant experience on all types of projects in a range of sectors, including new office buildings, casinos, airport facilities, historic restorations, convention centers, transportation, roadway, and mixed-use facilities. His expertise includes managing projects that require critical advance planning and maintenance of uninterrupted ongoing daily operations. A career-long advocate of unionized construction throughout the Northeast, he served three years as president of the Building Contractors Association of New York.
Mr. Mennella has managed the construction of many New York icons in addition to the new 7 World Trade Center, such as the restoration and renovation of Carnegie Hall, the JP Morgan World Headquarters at 60 Wall Street, the JFK International Airport Redevelopment, the construction of the new Whitehall Ferry Terminal, the historic renovation of the Battery Maritime building and the renovation of the Javits Center. In New Jersey, he has overseen major facilities for Continental Airlines at Newark’s Liberty International Airport, as well as the spectacular $1-billion Borgata Hotel, Casino and Spa, the original Golden Nugget, the Atlantic City Convention Center and Boardwalk Hall.
A lifelong Brooklyn resident, Mr. Mennella graduated from Xaverian High School in 1964. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Columbia University and a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering from NYU/Polytechnic Institute of New York.
