Coach Spelman is a proud Xaverian graduate from the Class of '92. As a Clipper, Coach Spelman lettered in two varsity sports - basketball and tennis. He played for 4 years in Xaverian’s basketball program before playing at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn. In 2000, he returned to his alma mater as an administrator and began coaching as an assistant with the Varsity Club Basketball Team. He became head coach of the Varsity Club Program the following season and led them to a city championship game appearance in 2004. In 2005, he became the head coach of the Freshmen Basketball Team, leading them to a city championship victory in 2006. In 2008, he became an assistant coach for the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team and served in that role until 2012. In the spring of 2019, Coach Spelman stepped in to coach the Girls' Varsity Basketball Team, leading them to their first varsity playoff victory over Bishop Loughlin. He led the 2019-2020 Girls' Varsity Team to a 20-6 record and their first appearance in the city championship. In addition to his role as basketball coach, Mr. Spelman is currently Xaverian’s Assistant Principal for Enrollment and has three children, Taylor '22, Ryan '21, and Madison '28.
