The Xaverian Community of Emerging Leaders (XCEL)

XCEL is a summer enrichment program that integrates educational, spiritual, and leadership development for young women and men entering the eighth grade in September. In the Xaverian tradition, we seek students who possess zeal in the classroom and humility in their leadership. The program will run from June 28 to July 29, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm. There is no XCEL on Fridays.

The 2020 interactive XCEL program was a significant achievement for Xaverian. Over 220 students participated and earned XCEL certificates despite the challenges brought forward by the year. This year's XCEL program is prepared for every challenge that may lie ahead. We're prepared to host our young emerging leaders in an in-person or virtual format.

The daily morning schedule includes TACHS prep classes, as well as elective course options in robotics, film production, forensics, micro bit and drone programming, journalism, and the history of Bay Ridge, followed by a variety of recreational activities in the afternoon. Our location across the street from Shore Road Park allows for outdoor extracurricular activities as well. XCEL integrates its classroom curriculum with hands-on learning experiences.

While academic enrichment is a major component of the program, equally important is a focus on the students’ spiritual and leadership development. Along with leadership seminars and team-building programs, students also participate in a service project to have a direct impact on their community.

The XCEL program accepts qualified young women and men who will have completed all of their academic requirements at the end of seventh grade. Willing to excel as a servant leader and grow as a young person of faith and integrity, participants will explore their potential and sharpen their talents within a nurturing environment of passionate Xaverian teachers and friendly Xaverian student leaders.

This summer the XCEL program has approximately 180 available seats. With annual applications exceeding that number, not all applicants are accepted. Therefore, please note that acceptance is based on the applicant’s record of academic consistency and effort, a willingness to learn and be challenged, and a mature demonstration of leadership among his or her peers.

As the program offers enrichment and not remediation, students who fail a course or with grades in the 70’s in the seventh grade are typically not accepted into XCEL.

To apply for XCEL, the parent/guardian and the student must:
  • Complete and submit the online application by the application deadline (no extensions will be granted)
  • Ask one school administrator or teacher to complete and submit the online recommendation by the application deadline (no extensions will be granted)
  • Upload a scanned copy of the applicant’s first marking period
  • Upload a scanned copy of the applicant’s second marking period
  • The online application process opens in late February 2021!
  • PLEASE NOTE: All of the required documentation is not required to be submitted at the same time, but ALL documentation requirements MUST be submitted by the application deadline.
  • No applications will be considered after that time.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Peter Barone, Director of XCEL at xcel@xaverian.org, or call (718) 836-7100, extension 867.
