XCEL 2020 - Important News!

For the past nine years, we have been able to offer XCEL,  a summer enrichment program that integrates educational, spiritual, and leadership development for young women and men entering the eighth grade in September. Given the ever-evolving situation surrounding COVID-19, we feel it prudent to not offer our traditional programming. This year, for the first time ever, we are proud to offer our XCEL program remotely.

This year's version of XCEL promises to be just as engaging, rigorous, and rewarding as years past. We are moving the program online in a distance learning format, where participants will be able to navigate through the course work from the comfort of home. Our emerging leaders will, for the very first time, have the ability to participate in every elective the program has to offer.  Participants will still be able to engage with Xaverian faculty and students and learn more about what daily life at Xaverian is all about!

Applications for the Xaverian Community of Emerging Leaders (XCEL) are currently under review. If your application is missing a report card or recommendation, there is still time to complete it. Please log on to your Xaverian account and complete your checklist. Applications need to be complete by June 1st. Students will be notified of an admissions decision on XCEL the first week of June.

The Xaverian Community of Emerging Leaders (XCEL)

XCEL is a summer enrichment program that integrates educational, spiritual, and leadership development for young women and men entering the eighth grade in September. In the Xaverian tradition, we seek students who possess zeal in the classroom and humility in their leadership. The program will run from July 1 to August 1, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm. There is no XCEL on Fridays.
The daily morning schedule includes TACHS prep classes, as well as elective course options in robotics, film production, forensics, microbit and drone programming, journalism, and the history of Bay Ridge, followed by a variety of recreational activities in the afternoon. In addition to the occasional use of our school gymnasium, our location across the street from Shore Road Park allows for outdoor extracurricular activities as well. XCEL integrates its classroom curriculum with hands-on learning experiences. Field trips to local NYC venues are also part of the learning experience.
While academic enrichment is a major component of the program, equally important is a focus on the students’ spiritual and leadership development. Along with leadership seminars and team-building programs, students also participate in a one-day servant leadership retreat.

Admission to the XCEL Program
The XCEL program accepts qualified young women and men who will have completed all of their academic requirements at the end of seventh grade. Willing to excel as a servant leader and grow as a young person of faith and integrity, participants will explore their potential and sharpen their talents within a nurturing environment of passionate Xaverian teachers and friendly Xaverian student leaders.
This summer the XCEL program has approximately 150-175 available seats. With annual applications exceeding that number, not all applicants are accepted. Therefore, please note that acceptance is based on the applicant’s record of academic consistency and effort, a willingness to learn and be challenged, and a mature demonstration of leadership among his or her peers.
As the program offers enrichment and not remediation, students who fail a course or with grades in the 70’s in the seventh grade are typically not accepted into XCEL.
To apply for XCEL, the parent/guardian and the student must:
  • Complete and submit the online application by the application deadline (no extensions will be granted)
  • Ask one school administrator or teacher to complete and submit the online recommendation by the application deadline (no extensions will be granted)
  • Upload a scanned copy of the applicant’s most recent report card, which must include at least two-quarters of grades.
The online application process opens January 31, 2020!
PLEASE NOTE: All of the required documentation is not required to be submitted at the same time, but ALL documentation requirements MUST be submitted by the application deadline. No applications will be considered after that time.
