XAVERIAN HEROES GOLF OUTING 2020
First, let me say that we are praying every day as a community for the health and safety of our alumni and their families. This historically crazy time in which we find ourselves has deprived us of celebrating our Clipper alums at events that have long been marked as favorites on our calendar. We are well aware that this quarantine is necessary, but miss those wonderful days when we share a beverage, a meal, a great story or… or a round of golf.
Over the course of the last decade, the Heroes Golf Outing has evolved into one of Xaverian’s best days; so enthusiastic are the golfers who participate and the committee of distinguished and dedicated alumni whose devotion to alma mater knows no bounds. The outing has become, in every way, more of a celebration than a round of golf. Imagine our disappointment when we had to cancel this year’s tournament. Almost cancel.
While social distancing regulations will not allow us to gather as a large group at Marine Park, golf courses in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut have begun to ease restrictions. It is our sincere hope that New York City will follow suit by June 21st. For these reasons, and because our committee just will not go down without a fight, we are scheduling a Virtual Heroes Golf Outing that will take place beginning on Sunday, June 21st, and will conclude on Sunday, June 28th. Here’s how it will work:
We invite you to play a round with a friend on the golf course of your choice. You don’t even need a friend to register. You can enter as a single. The only requirements, really, are clubs, a ball, and 18 holes. In much the same fashion as a normal outing, prizes and raffle tickets will be awarded to the winners of contests as well as the players and scramble groups with the lowest scores. As some clubs are no longer permitting foursomes, we will score the scramble tournament for twosomes. Those will now be presented to each group. We will also be giving a grand prize to the individual with the lowest score, so, if you’re a group, you’ll have to keep two scorecards: Individual and scramble. These are the details:
A $50 participation fee will be charged to each golfer. While this does not cover your greens fees, (that’s on you), it will earn you a gift to commemorate the outing and give you ten tickets for the raffle contests. More importantly, you will help fund The Dennis O’Berg ’91 scholarship as well as the Fortis Fund, which provides a tuition discount to the children of the FDNY and NYPD. Click here to register.
Golfers will submit a photo of their scorecards and the outcome of all relevant contests to Dillon Burns ‘12 at email@example.com. All raffle prizes will be pulled on 6/29. Winners will be notified immediately.
While this isn’t the ideal way for us to celebrate our pride for all of our alums in the FDNY and NYPD, it is a method by which we can still support our students; especially this year. As you can imagine, there are a number of our families whose health or economics have been directly affected by this pandemic. Let’s be the shoulders on which they can stand.
