Barbara A. Ives

Barbara A. Ives is a retired U.S. Navy Captain with almost 27 years of service to our country. Captain (ret) Barbara Ives, a native of Pennsylvania, graduated with honors from the United States Naval Academy and received her commissioning in 1980. She is distinguished as a member of the first class of women at the Naval Academy.

Ms. Ives began her teaching career as a certified instructor in the California Community College system in 1982. Moving then to the east coast of the United States, she taught in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and now in Maryland. Ms. Ives is on the approved list of science fair judges for the Office of Naval Research for three states.

Barbara Ives has taught at St. Mary’s Ryken High School for five years and was selected as the math department chairperson for two of those years. Additionally, she was selected as the 2007 Veteran Teacher of the Year for the Archdiocese of Washington D.C. In the fall of 2007, Ms. Ives was honored by the Honorable Robert L. Ehrlich Jr in recognizing her as a National Honor Roll Outstanding American Teacher.

In fall of 2007, Ms. Ives took a year leave of absence from teaching to focus on supporting Naval Air Station Patuxent River base related events and to promote sponsorship and support for the Individual Augmentee Spouse Support Group (IASSG). Ms. Ives was the Director of the IASSG, an organization designed to support Individual Augmentee (service members serving overseas fighting the global war on terror) Spouses and Families from June 2006 until May 2008. In March 2008, Ms. Ives was awarded the Maryland Governor’s Volunteer Service Certificate for her work with this special group. In May 2008, Ms. Ives was awarded the Department of the Navy Meritorious Public Service Award for her support of over 450 families and spouses during her two year tenure as Director of the NAS Patuxent River IASSG.

In July 2008, Barbara Ives was selected as Dean of Academics for St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Maryland. Additionally, Ms. Ives is on the Board of Directors for the Patuxent Naval Air Museum, BECA, Chairperson for the Charity Committee of the Lexington Park Rotary Club, and Education Vice President for the Southern Maryland Chapter of AFCEA.

Barbara Ives is married to Captain (ret) Glen Ives, former Commanding Officer of NAS Patuxent Naval Air Station and present Group Vice President for Sabre Systems. She has three sons: LT Glen Christopher Ives, USN stationed in Chicago, Illinois; CAPT Matthew Francis Ives USMC stationed in Kings Bay, Georgia; and PFC John Alexander Ives, USA assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington.
