2021 Season Recap

The 2021 reason was riddled with challenges, excitement, and great success. The season began with Hurricane Ida flooding the volleyball program out of the gym. With tremendous support from the entire administration and the tireless efforts of Mr. Mancusi, the girls found their everyday home at Aviator Sports complex and became fondly known throughout the building as “The Roadies.”

Faced with this adversity of not being able to play in their gym for the second season in a row, the team put their heads down and eyes forward, took the hit, and got to work! They played every game on the road and finished the regular season as undefeated CHSAA Tier 1 Champions behind the outstanding play of Senior starters Morgan Thurlow, Madelyn Hanley, Sam Fadel, Alex Cook, Cait Moran, and AJ Crowley  Seniors Grace Murray and Abbey Tubridy made important contributions to the team’s success as well. Youthful contributions from members of the Junior class included the stellar play starters Claudia Bayard, Shannon Smith, and Nancy McDade. Cara Anderson and Lauren Sarn made huge contributions in many big games and wins.  The hard work of Ellie Wood and Kathleen Burns did not go unnoticed and contributed to the team’s success. The girls grinded through the traveling haul of September and October with tremendous wins over St. Francis Prep, Molloy, TMLA, St. John’s Prep, and Fontbonne.

Entering the playoffs undefeated, the girls faced a hungry and spirited opponent in the Molloy Stanners. The Clippers prevailed in an epic 5 set match that displayed the best that CHSAA volleyball had to offer in high-level volleyball, competitiveness, and sportsmanship.  The final road trip proved to be a bit too exhausting for the Roadies. The girls would go on to fall to Fontbonne Hall in the Championship game finishing the 2021 campaign with a final record of 11-1.

Make no mistake about it, the 2021 Season was outstanding.  The overall body of work was extraordinary and the Clippers modeled the standard for which the game should be played at its highest athletic level.  Some of the things they did on the court were competitively unprecedented. This was only matched by the perseverance they showed facing equally unprecedented conditions in pandemic obstacles and the circumstance brought to them by Hurricane Ida. Great life lessons were learned in victory and defeat -- the greatest and most important being that these student-athletes returned from a pandemic and proved to all who watched that the joy of high school sports and competing is alive and well, and is ever present in Xaverian’s volleyball program. With a very young Varsity team and tremendous talent moving up from the Junior Varisty program next season, the future of the Varsity program looks very, very bright!

To our Seniors, thank you for building the foundation for which the success of this program was built. We look forward to celebrating those of you who will be signing your commitment letters to play on the College level!
