60th Anniversary of the opening of Xaverian
Sixty Septembers ago Xaverian opened its doors to its first incoming freshman class, the largest class ever admitted to Xaverian. As described by Brother Hilary, CFX, the first principal, (see Then & Now) “560 boys alighted from the B-9 and B-34 buses on September 9th and were swallowed up in just a few of its many classrooms.” Indicative of the severity of the times, only 392 of those freshman appear in the 1961 Graduation Program. A striking attrition.
While there is some disagreement among alumni regarding details, it is certain that the building was not yet fully completed on opening day. A team of workmen appeared on site every afternoon into the winter. Visit this space often to see what new items are added.
The Archive Office is always grateful to hear from members of the Xaverian community. Please send comments, suggestions or personal recollections. Memorabilia in any form is always welcome: originals or digitized photos, event programs – everything is welcome.
