2022 Season Recap

In 2021, Xaverian’s Junior Varsity B League Football Team had a major change with Coach Dominick Aluotto taking over as head coach. In 2022, Xaverian’s Junior Varsity Football Team made a major change, like in 2021. In 2022, the JV Football Team decided to move up to the A division, which now included tougher teams and playoffs. After going 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the league, Xaverian believed it was time to make the jump.

The Junior Varsity Football Team was now in the JV A League, single A division which consisted of Xaverian, Holy Cross, Mount Saint Michaels, Saint John the Baptist, and Cardinal Spellman. The JV A season started with Xaverian on the road at Holy Cross in week 1. Holy Cross handed Xaverian a 30-14 loss, which was not the start Xaverian was looking for. In week 2, Xaverian’s home opener was supposed to be against Cardinal Spellman, but Spellman had to drop their team, and Xaverian played James Madison in a non-league game. Xaverian came out victorious with a 19-8 win. In week 3, Xaverian faced Mount Saint Michael Academy in their second division game. Xaverian steamrolled Mount with a 46-0 win, where everyone had themselves a day. In week 4, Xaverian faced Xavier in a nail bitter that Xaverian ended up losing 22-20 in the final minute of the 4th quarter. In week 5, Xaverian was on the road at Saint John the Baptist in a battle for 2nd place in the division. Xaverian left Saint John’s with a 21-7 victory. In week 6, Xaverian had a bye week which helped the team recover from injuries and have a week off to rest. In week 7, Xaverian faced off against Saint Francis Prep (eventually 2022 JV A, AA Division Champs). Xaverian fell in a heartbreaking 14-0 loss. In week 8, Xaverian faced Mount in a rematch in the Bronx this time. Xaverian won again, this time 27-0, as Xaverian was getting ready for the playoffs.

Xaverian finished the season the 2nd seed in the division and faced Saint John the Baptist in round 1. Xaverian pulled out the win in a tight first playoff game-winning 14-12 against Saint John’s, which advanced Xaverian to the championship. Xaverian faced off against Holy Cross in a rematch of week 1 to see who would be crowned Champion. Xaverian trailed 6-0 to Holy Cross from the 1st quarter to the 4th quarter. With under 2 minutes left in the 4th, Xaverian scored a touchdown and converted the 2-point extra point, which gave them a 8-6 lead. Xaverian’s Junior Varsity team closed out the game and won 8-6, making this Xaverian Football’s first Junior Varsity Championship since 2010.

Including the playoffs, Xaverian’s Junior Varsity Football Team finished the season 6-3 overall and 5-1 in division games. The 2022 Junior Varsity Football Team was the first Xaverian junior varsity team to win a game in JV A since 2015, the first Xaverian junior varsity team to win a JV championship since 2010, led all of the JVA league in passing touchdowns, and led JVA single A division in points scored. The roster was loaded with an abundance of talent. Two-way superstars Jaiden Cadotte, Finbar McGuinness, and Thomas Martin helped lead the team on both sides of the ball. The offense had standouts Jude Vanooyen, Conor Molen, and Diego Foster. The defense was anchored by Matt McDonnell, Mike Astarita, Sean Costello, and Mike Lafata. Can’t forget the do it all utility players like Aaron Meredith and Matteo Perrotta. The cherry on top were freshmen standouts Riley McLaughlin and Joe Tommassetti. The Xaverian Football Program is filled with talent all over the place, and this will not be the last championship this group will win in this school.
