A prolific researcher, he is the principal investigator for several notable clinical trials that examine strategies and potential roles for early therapy in MS. Dr. Galetta has written more than 250 original publications concerning clinical, radiologic, and research aspects of multiple sclerosis, sports-related concussion, and neuro-ophthalmology, and serves on the editorial boards of Neurology and the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology. He is co-author of the textbook Neuro-Ophthalmology: Diagnosis and Management.

Often noted for his abilities as an educator and mentor, Dr. Galetta has received nearly 50 teaching awards, among them the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award, Penn’s highest teaching award; the American Neurological Association’s Distinguished Neurology Teacher Award, given each year to only one teacher in the United States; the Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges; and the Parker Palmer award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Dr Galetta has been consistently recognized by multiple periodicals for being a top clinician and he has received the Louis Duhring Prize which is awarded each year to one outstanding clinician specialist at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Dr. Galetta earned his undergraduate degree from Penn in 1979 where he was received the Class of 1915 prize awarded to the outstanding scholar-athlete of the graduating class and the Cane award for outstanding leadership. He was also inducted into the University of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 for his accomplishments in Track and Sprint Football and to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Minority Hall of Fame for his contributions to minority education in 2010. He received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1983. Dr. Galerra completed his neurology residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and his neuroophthalmology fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida. He is a proud member of Xaverian’s class of 1975.
