“For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven”
Ecclesiastes 3:1
Mindful of these words from scripture, I write to share with you that at our most recent meeting of our Board of Trustees, I informed our Trustees that I will be retiring as President of Xaverian effective June 30, 2027, at the conclusion of our 2026-2027 school year. At that time, I will have been privileged to serve our school for 44 years, with the last 18 years as president. As you might imagine, this is a bittersweet moment for me, as my time at Xaverian, including my four years as a student, I consider to be among the greatest blessings of my life, and they will be moments that I will treasure forever.
It will soon be time for me to begin a new chapter in my life, and for Xaverian to begin the next new and exciting chapter in our school’s history. Xaverian has never been stronger than it is today, with our enrollment at the highest it has been since the school opened its doors in 1957. With our academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs second to none in New York City, and now, with the commencement of construction of the Michael T. Strianese ‘74 Exploration and Innovation Center, the largest campus expansion in the school’s history scheduled for completion in June of 2027, Xaverian has never been better positioned to expand our Catholic mission and to pave the way for the next generation of Clippers. I firmly believe that Catholic education, and a Xaverian education in particular, is needed in our world now more than ever before, and we stand ready to carry on the mission of the Xaverian Brothers here in Brooklyn and to respond to God’s call to serve.
It has been my great privilege to work alongside the most talented, passionate and dedicated faculty for more than four decades, and together with the finest, most creative and inspirational administrative team any school could possibly hope to assemble, we have witnessed over the years the transformation of young boys and girls into confident, faith-filled leaders eager and ready to serve our world and to build God’s Kingdom. Without question, the greatest joy of my time at Xaverian has been to know, and to be a part of the journey of the amazing and talented students who have graced our classrooms and hallways. The generations of Clippers I have been privileged to serve have profoundly impacted my life in ways they will never know, and I pray I have played some small role in helping them to discover their God-given talents, gifts, and purpose in life.
I look forward to this next chapter in my life and the time that I will now have to spend with my family. I have been blessed to be on this incredible journey with my best friend Jeanne, my wife of 42 years, a journey that started in Xaverian’s gym when I was a senior back in 1978! Little did we both know that Xaverian would be in our lives from that day forward! Jeanne and I now look forward to spending time with our greatest gifts, our daughter Jamie, son-in-law Ken, and our two grandchildren, Luke and Julia (Xaverian’s Class of '37 and '40…God willing)!
I am certain the year ahead will be filled with amazing accomplishments, moments of joy and grace, and anticipation for all that God has planned for Xaverian. I look forward to working together with our Board of Trustees as they begin their work to select Xaverian’s next President.
We are blessed to have a talented and passionate Board of Trustees who are led by an outstanding Board Chair and alumnus, Mr. Bill Zucker '75. My close relationship with Bill dates back to our high school days, and I have every confidence that Bill and our Trustees will choose the perfect individual to lead our school in this next exciting chapter. I am eager to work together in the coming year with our Board, our Administrative Team, our Faculty, and my successor to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
Throughout my time at Xaverian, I have been mentored by Xaverian Brothers who saw things in me that I certainly never saw in myself. I will be forever grateful for the confidence and trust they placed in me, and I treasure the friendship that I maintain with them to this day. Those of us blessed to be part of Xaverian education are recipients of the Xaverian “Charism”, or gift, which calls each of us to live ordinary lives that give witness to God’s unconditional love. It is through this “common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life” at Xaverian that we come to know and to fall in love with God, freely spreading that love to all whom we meet on our journey in life. I thank God for this gift I received, and for the gift of my Xaverian family, and I thank each and every one of you for the friendship and support that I have received over the years.
May God’s grace and blessings be with my Xaverian family always.
Once a Clipper, always a Clipper!
